Electronic Arts is opening a substantial portion of its classic PC vault on Steam and GOG, bringing 25 games from several foundational series to modern storefronts. The rollout includes the full mainline Ultima role-playing saga, multiple Wing Commander releases, both Crusader action games, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, and Road Rash.

The collection is split between standard re-releases and seven more extensively refreshed Anniversary Editions. The standard releases are priced at $4.99 each, while the Anniversary Editions cost $9.99 each. EA says the enhanced versions have been updated to work more smoothly on modern systems, with revised control support and performance improvements intended to make these older games easier to access while retaining their original character.

For players who have spent years hoping for an easier, official route back to Origin-era PC games, this is a notably broad preservation effort. It reaches across genres and decades: space combat simulations, motorcycle combat racing, isometric action, management simulation, first-person dungeon RPGs, and the sprawling fantasy adventures that helped define computer role-playing games.

Seven Anniversary Editions Lead the Return

The premium side of the launch consists of Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition and six Wing Commander-related releases. Those games have a particular advantage beyond basic compatibility work: EA has restored cinematic material that had been thought lost.

For useful background on this topic, read WendyQuest Turns Boss Battles Into Wendy's App Food Reward Chances.

The company says the Anniversary Editions grew out of the discovery of a physical media vault containing thousands of Betacam, VHS, and D1 tapes, along with additional production assets. Digitizing that material reportedly recovered master full-motion-video sequences for the seven Anniversary Edition titles. More than 1,500 cinematic scenes across the games were then re-edited for these releases.

That work matters especially for Wing Commander, a series remembered not only for cockpit combat and branching campaign drama, but also for its ambitious use of live-action scenes. Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom are particularly associated with their FMV presentation, including appearances by Mark Hamill. At the time, the scale of their cast-driven storytelling was a major statement about what cinematic PC games could attempt.

The Anniversary Edition lineup is:

  • Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander Prophecy: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Privateer 2: The Darkening: 30th Anniversary Edition

EA also highlighted the role of the fan community in the restored Wing Commander versions. Community creators were willing to collaborate with the internal team, allowing their mods to be incorporated into the official Anniversary Edition releases. That acknowledgement is important in a genre where volunteer patches, installation fixes, and compatibility projects have often kept older software usable long after its original retail era ended.

There is a benefit for existing digital owners as well. Anyone who already owns a digital copy of the applicable Wing Commander titles through GOG or the EA App will receive the Anniversary Edition upgrade automatically on the respective platform. The announcement specifically frames this as recognition of the community's ongoing dedication to the franchise.

Ultima's Complete Mainline Journey Is Included

The release is equally significant for RPG history. Every mainline Ultima game is part of the catalog, alongside both Ultima Underworld titles. Created by Richard "Lord British" Garriott, the series evolved dramatically across its long run, from early computer RPG experimentation to huge party-based adventures and technically pioneering first-person worlds.

For newcomers, the breadth of this selection provides a rare opportunity to trace the genre's development through one influential lineage. The earliest games establish the series' fantasy setting and open-ended sensibilities. Later entries such as Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar are renowned for shifting emphasis from a conventional defeat-the-villain structure toward moral virtues and personal conduct. Ultima VII, meanwhile, is often celebrated for its interactive world design and dense simulation-like detail.

The Ultima Underworld games are just as historically valuable. Their first-person exploration and immersive systems helped point toward a future that would influence the wider immersive sim tradition. Including them alongside the numbered games makes this a more complete representation of the broader Ultima legacy rather than a simple greatest-hits package.

The Ultima releases are:

  • Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
  • Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress
  • Ultima III: Exodus
  • Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
  • Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
  • Ultima VI: The False Prophet
  • Ultima VII: The Complete Edition
  • Ultima VIII: Gold Edition
  • Ultima IX: Ascension
  • Ultima Underworld I
  • Ultima Underworld II

More Than RPGs and Space Sims

Although Ultima and Wing Commander are the headline names, the remaining games make the release slate much broader. Theme Hospital brings its darkly comic hospital-management simulation back into the spotlight, while Strike Commander offers another snapshot of the technologically ambitious flight games associated with the period.

The two Crusader games, No Remorse and No Regret, add fast-paced, isometric action set in a dystopian future. The standard Wing Commander lineup also includes Privateer, Academy, and Armada, showing how far the franchise extended beyond its numbered narrative installments. Privateer in particular took the universe in a more freeform direction, while the other releases offered alternative takes on the series' signature space-combat formula.

The complete group of standard re-releases is:

  • Wing Commander: Privateer
  • Wing Commander: Academy
  • Wing Commander: Armada
  • Strike Commander
  • Theme Hospital
  • Crusader: No Remorse
  • Crusader: No Regret
  • The full Ultima selection, including Ultima Underworld I and II

A Welcome Focus on Accessibility and Preservation

Classic-game re-releases can vary enormously in quality. Some simply make an old executable available again, leaving players to contend with outdated control assumptions, display limitations, installation quirks, and performance problems. EA's stated focus on modern systems and controls for the Anniversary Editions suggests a more hands-on approach for those seven games, while the collaboration with established community modders offers additional reason for optimism around the Wing Commander updates.

It is also encouraging to see the release positioned around recovered original media rather than merely a compatibility pass. The restoration of master FMV assets means these games can be experienced with an important piece of their presentation history preserved. That is especially relevant for titles whose identity was inseparable from their filmed sequences, theatrical performances, and elaborate production design.

Not every game in the 25-title collection receives the Anniversary Edition treatment, and EA has not presented the $4.99 standard releases as equivalent remasters. Still, placing the full range together on Steam and GOG lowers a major barrier for players who want to explore these series without tracking down old discs or navigating aging hardware and operating-system issues.

For longtime fans, the arrival offers official storefront access, enhanced editions for key favorites, and free upgrades in specific existing-owner cases. For a newer audience, it is an unusually large guided entry point into an era when PC developers were testing the limits of cinematic storytelling, simulation, player choice, and world-building. From Britannia to the Kilrathi war, this catalog returns a substantial collection of games whose influence still echoes through modern RPGs, space adventures, and management sims.
