Escape From Playtime, a new co-op survival horror extraction game set in the world of Poppy Playtime, is scheduled to reach Steam Early Access on October 21, 2026. Mob Entertainment revealed the date during PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, outlining a game that moves the action into the perspective of the Smiling Critters and asks players to repeatedly venture into the dangerous Playtime Co. factory for resources.

The setup brings familiar Poppy Playtime unease into a run-based multiplayer format. Players can enter the factory alone or form a group of up to four, scavenging for materials required by a shadowy building effort. Their employer, or perhaps captor, is an ominous entity simply known as the Voice. It promises the Critters salvation, a home, and freedom, but the details behind its requests appear intentionally uncertain.

That uncertainty is central to the game's premise. Each successful collection run is not just a matter of survival and loot; it also contributes to a larger project whose purpose remains obscured. Players will be gathering supplies for the Voice while facing rejected Playtime Co. creations that roam the facility. The apparent promise of escape may therefore be tied to demands that become increasingly troubling as the game unfolds.

A factory built for repeat runs

Escape From Playtime is designed around extraction-style expeditions rather than a single linear trip through the factory. Teams head into changing portions of the Playtime Co. complex, search for the resources they need, and attempt to bring those supplies back out. The factory's layouts are procedurally altered between runs, meaning players should not expect a memorized route to remain fully dependable from one session to the next.

This approach could make every expedition a fresh test of navigation, communication, and risk management. A corridor that felt safe during one run may no longer be the best option during the next, while alternate routes and hiding places can potentially become the difference between a clean extraction and a failed mission. The changing spaces also fit the surreal, hostile atmosphere associated with Playtime Co., a company whose abandoned facilities have never been ordinary places to explore.

The announced gameplay loop combines several survival-horror staples. Players will solve puzzles, look for clues, collect tools, and make use of distractions when danger closes in. Hiding spots provide another possible answer to pursuing enemies, though the game's emphasis on collection and transport means simply avoiding threats is not the only challenge. The team must still recover the required materials and get them to safety.

Because the factory is built around evolving layouts, decisions made during a run may matter as much as raw knowledge of enemy behavior. Players could choose to stay together for protection, divide responsibilities to cover more ground, or send one person toward a risky objective while the others prepare an escape route. Those choices are expected to sit at the heart of the game's cooperative tension.

Smiling Critters take the lead

Unlike prior stories that have focused on an outsider investigating Playtime Co., Escape From Playtime presents events through the Smiling Critters' viewpoint. That shift gives the game a smaller-scale angle on recognizable locations and dangers within the broader universe. Mob Entertainment calls one aspect of this perspective Mini Mode, which lets players explore iconic factory areas from the scale of a Critter.

Seeing the facility through these characters is more than a cosmetic change. A smaller viewpoint can reshape how spaces feel, making familiar factory rooms seem larger, more maze-like, and less secure. It also gives the developers room to create routes, hiding places, and obstacles around the Critters' size. What may seem like an unremarkable section of a facility to a human could become a major traversal challenge for a small character carrying valuable scavenged resources.

The Early Access version is planned to begin with four playable Smiling Critters. Four additional Critters are also planned as unlocks, providing a roster of eight in total once they become available. Mob Entertainment has not detailed the individual gameplay differences between the characters in this announcement, so it remains to be seen whether their identities will substantially change how teams approach each run or primarily offer new ways to inhabit the setting.

The choice of the Smiling Critters also places Escape From Playtime closer to one of the franchise's most unsettling concepts: cheerful mascots whose presentation masks a darker reality. Their mission for the Voice appears to build on that contrast. They are sent into terrifying environments to gather materials under the promise that fulfilling these orders will eventually lead somewhere safe.

Cooperation, proximity chat, and difficult calls

Escape From Playtime supports solo play, but its main structure is built for groups of up to four. The cooperative mode uses proximity voice chat, which means players' ability to communicate depends on where they are positioned in the factory rather than a constant, clear party-wide channel.

Proximity chat can be especially effective in a survival horror game because it gives physical distance real consequences. A teammate who wanders too far ahead may have trouble sharing a warning. Someone hiding in another room may be unable to clearly explain where an enemy is moving. Conversely, staying near allies makes coordination easier but can leave everyone vulnerable if a threat discovers the whole group at once.

This system supports the broader tension between splitting up and sticking together. Staying as a unit could make puzzle solving and rescues more manageable, while dividing the group may speed up scavenging across a dynamically changing map. Neither choice is guaranteed to be correct. The enemy lineup, tools available on a given run, and the resources required by the Voice should all influence the safest plan.

Mob Entertainment has described the game's survival options as including tools, diversions, hidden spaces, and alternate paths. These features suggest teams will have more options than simply fleeing whenever they encounter one of the factory's dangers. Still, the announcement frames the rejected Playtime Co. creations as a major threat, and the extraction objective means players will need to maintain their composure while carrying out tasks that can expose them to danger.

Early Access begins with a focused foundation

The October launch is explicitly an Early Access release, and the initial content offering is planned as a starting point rather than a complete final package. At launch, Escape From Playtime is expected to feature one starter zone, the first four-character Critter roster, and a core selection of enemies. The other four Critters are planned to be unlockable as the Early Access experience expands.

Future updates are expected to add more zones, Critters, features, and refinements. Mob Entertainment also intends to use player feedback to help guide development, which is particularly relevant for a co-op extraction game where balance, map variety, communication tools, and repeat-play incentives can all evolve substantially after people begin playing at scale.

A measured starting lineup may help the team establish the fundamentals: how quickly teams can gather resources, how threatening the enemies feel, whether procedural changes create enough variety, and how well solo runs compare with four-player sessions. It also gives the developers an opportunity to adjust the relationship between exploration and extraction before expanding the factory with additional areas.

For players interested in the expanding Poppy Playtime universe, the larger narrative hook may be just as important as the multiplayer structure. The Voice's instructions carry the suggestion of a long-term mystery, and each item recovered seemingly supports something beyond a routine survival operation. The promise of a home and freedom is compelling, but the setting offers plenty of reasons to doubt that the Voice's intentions are altruistic.

A new kind of Poppy Playtime fear

Escape From Playtime is not positioned as a simple retread of previous Poppy Playtime adventures. Its focus on repeatable factory incursions, extraction goals, shifting layouts, and squad decision-making gives it a distinct structure within the franchise. The horror is expected to come not only from what lurks in the facility, but from the pressure of deciding how much danger is acceptable before the team turns back.

That design leaves room for memorable multiplayer stories: a group separated by a changing route, a desperate attempt to transport materials while a threat patrols nearby, or a rescue that forces players to abandon a safer path. Solo players will face those same systems without the reassurance of nearby teammates, making the factory's puzzles, routes, and hiding spaces especially important.

Steam Early Access begins on October 21, 2026. With one starter zone, a planned initial enemy roster, and the first half of its Smiling Critter cast, Escape From Playtime will begin building its own corner of the Playtime Co. story while its larger factory, roster, and mysteries remain set to grow over time.
