3DClouds has announced AfterZero: The Last Drive, a story-led single-player survival driving game due to arrive in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Revealed during the Galaxies Gaming Showcase, the new project moves the independent studio into a harsher kind of world: a post-industrial landscape buried beneath permanent snow, ice and increasingly desperate survivors.

The central idea is simple but promising. Players leave the relative safety of a settlement in an off-road vehicle called Old Grizzly, pushing through abandoned cities, frozen lakes and mountain forests in search of useful supplies. Those journeys are not merely about collecting crafting materials, however. The game frames each expedition as part of a larger attempt to sustain a community, restore a locomotive and eventually reach a rumored haven known as Sunnyland.

That destination is said to be a place where winter's grip is less severe. Reaching it will apparently mean managing scarce resources, improving both a vehicle and a base, assisting other survivors and uncovering the truth behind the machinery active throughout the wasteland. With its blend of driving, exploration, survival systems and puzzle solving, AfterZero: The Last Drive is aiming for an adventure in which progress comes from preparation as much as boldness.

An endless winter after the Frostfall

AfterZero takes place after an event called the Frostfall, which has scattered humanity across a world smothered in snow and ice. The setting is described as post-industrial, suggesting that remnants of a former technological age remain embedded in the landscape even as people struggle to stay warm, fed and connected.

Old Grizzly is at the center of the player's efforts to navigate that hostile environment. Rather than functioning as a simple method of transport between objectives, the off-road vehicle is designed to be an evolving survival tool. It can be upgraded over the course of the campaign, opening up routes and options that may have been inaccessible or too dangerous earlier in the journey.

The player is not entirely alone outside the camp. A small drone named T3DDY accompanies the vehicle, while radio transmissions from survivors provide a human connection across the frozen wilderness. Those voices should help establish the stakes of each excursion: every spare part, medical item and source of food can matter to someone waiting back at the settlement.

3DClouds has described the campaign as oppressive and at times unforgiving. That tone is reflected in the threats facing players beyond the Firewall safe haven. Darkness arrives, storms can form, and reserves of vital supplies decline. The decision to keep driving may offer the chance to find something essential, but turning back before conditions worsen could be just as important.

Old Grizzly is the key to exploration

Vehicle progression looks set to be one of AfterZero's defining systems. Players will gather materials from the world, then use them to build up the base and craft new tools or capabilities for Old Grizzly. The announced upgrades include grappling hooks, EMPs, ice tires and nitrogen guns, each of which points to a different way of overcoming environmental obstacles or dealing with the machines left in the wasteland.

Grappling equipment could create paths across gaps or unstable terrain, while ice tires naturally fit a world in which traction is likely to be a constant concern. EMPs imply that technology will sometimes be an active threat rather than mere scenery, and nitrogen guns suggest tools that can interact with the extreme cold in unusual ways. The exact limits and uses of these upgrades have not yet been detailed, but the list indicates that the vehicle will develop beyond a standard off-road truck.

This structure also gives the game's open-world design a clear purpose. The player is expected to venture into dangerous territory for components and supplies, return to improve their chances of survival, and then head farther out. It is a familiar progression loop, but one that could take on a different character when the primary companion is a customizable vehicle rather than a weapon alone.

Exploration will include abandoned urban spaces, icy bodies of water and forested mountain regions. Such contrasting locations could help prevent the endless-winter premise from becoming visually uniform, while also presenting different hazards for Old Grizzly and its driver. The game has not outlined the size of its world or how its regions connect, so those details remain to be seen.

Keeping the Firewall refuge alive

Survival is not limited to the road. At the Firewall refuge, players will be responsible for helping maintain the people who depend on the camp. Food, medicine and heat are all named as necessities, placing the condition of the settlement alongside personal exploration as a major concern.

Several survivors have already been identified: Pops, Nova and Sak. Their individual roles in the story have not been fully explained, but players will work with them as they maintain the camp, improve equipment and prepare for future expeditions. The refuge also has a train that needs repairing, making the locomotive another long-term project tied to the broader escape effort.

The train is particularly notable because it gives the premise a physical sense of momentum. While Old Grizzly handles the immediate challenge of traveling through snowbound terrain, restoring a locomotive may represent the group's eventual ability to leave the area behind. It also suggests a practical reason to search for specific parts across the open world rather than simply accumulating generic resources.

Base upkeep, vehicle crafting and survivor support are often separate features in survival games. AfterZero appears to connect them more directly: successful expeditions provide the materials needed to protect the refuge, and the refuge in turn equips the player for the next push into the cold. How demanding these management elements will be has not been confirmed, but the setup places human needs at the heart of the game's progression.

A machine mystery beneath the snow

Beyond the fight against exposure lies a larger mystery. An old AI controls machines scattered across the wasteland, and the player will be able to hack, disable and exploit glitches in those systems. Doing so is intended to reveal what is controlling the AI and, crucially, how the survivors might escape.

That element gives AfterZero a science-fiction thread to complement its grounded survival premise. The frozen world is not only dangerous because of weather and dwindling supplies; it is also shaped by remnants of automated technology that may be operating with motives the player does not yet understand. The relationship between the AI, the Frostfall and Sunnyland has not been revealed.

It remains unclear whether hacking will be a dedicated puzzle system, a contextual interaction mechanic or a mixture of both. Still, the ability to turn machine glitches to the player's advantage could provide alternatives to direct confrontation and make technological ruins more than simple scavenging locations. It may also tie the game's narrative discoveries closely to its exploration loop.

"AfterZero: The Last Drive's oppressive atmosphere and somewhat unforgiving campaign is a big departure for us at 3DClouds," said Francesco Bruschi, CEO of 3DClouds.

Bruschi said the game combines exploration, puzzle solving, car upgrades, base elements and the dangers of its frozen setting in a way the studio believes stands apart from other games. The announcement does not yet offer a deeper breakdown of combat, mission structure or difficulty options, but it makes clear that the intended experience is built around pressure, planning and persistence.

Release window and platforms

AfterZero: The Last Drive is planned for 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No exact launch date has been announced. The game is listed for wishlisting on Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation and Xbox.

For now, the reveal establishes a compelling route for 3DClouds: a lonely drive across an industrial winter, a camp relying on every successful return, and a final destination that may or may not offer the safety survivors hope for. More information will be needed to show how its individual systems fit together in play, but Old Grizzly's long trip toward Sunnyland is now officially underway.
