Control Resonant is set to take a notably detailed approach to accessibility, difficulty, and player choice. Rather than offering only a familiar selection of broad presets such as Easy, Normal, or Hard, Remedy Entertainment plans to give players individual controls over many of the specific systems that can make action combat difficult--or insufficiently demanding.
The approach comes from lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov, who has outlined a philosophy centered on identifying the exact source of friction. A player who struggles to react within a tight dodge window may not need weaker enemies. Someone comfortable with fast reactions may still find a crowded battlefield, resource management, or melee positioning difficult to parse. Control Resonant's answer is a suite of settings intended to separate those problems rather than treating every challenge as the same thing.
That distinction matters. Difficulty settings have long been an especially blunt tool in action games. Lowering a preset can often reduce enemy health, damage, aggression, or several other values at once. It may get a player past an obstacle, but it can also alter the rhythm of combat, reduce the importance of a build, or turn carefully designed encounters into routine cleanup. Raising a preset can create the opposite problem, sometimes making foes feel overly durable instead of asking the player to engage with richer tactics.
A control panel instead of a single difficulty switch
Control Resonant is being designed around what Remedy calls a granular control panel. The stated goal is not simply to make the game easier. It is to let players change a particular part of the experience while leaving the rest of the intended combat structure intact wherever possible.

The settings described so far extend into unusually specific territory. Players will be able to alter enemy projectile speed, for example, which could be meaningful for anyone who needs additional reaction time. Boss encounters can have their perfect-dodge timing windows adjusted. The game will also include options concerning enemy damage and player damage, along with variables that affect how long it takes to break an enemy guard.
Other settings appear aimed at common action-game pressure points rather than raw numerical power. Players can reduce the sense of being swarmed by enemies approaching from outside the screen. There is also an enhanced melee magnetizing option, which can make close-range attacks connect more reliably and reduce the positioning demands of melee combat. For players who find camera management and target placement more difficult than decision-making, that could be a far more useful tool than simply increasing damage output.
This is an important framing for accessibility. The needs of players are not neatly sorted into one universal "easy mode" category. A person with motor-control limitations may require a wider dodge window but enjoy managing a complicated economy of powers, ammunition, upgrades, and cooldowns. Another person may be able to execute difficult inputs yet need less visual chaos or less punishing incoming damage. Remedy is not presenting these tools solely as accommodations for players encountering a barrier. The sliders are intended to work in both directions. That means players looking for a sharper action-RPG challenge may be able to accelerate enemy attacks, reduce their own effectiveness, tighten defensive timing, or otherwise create a harsher version of the combat loop. It is a practical acknowledgment that challenge preferences are just as varied as accessibility needs. One player's exhausting boss fight may be another player's ideal training ground.
More importantly, the ability to increase or decrease individual elements may be more expressive than a conventional Hard mode. A player may want high enemy damage but not inflated enemy health. Another may want strict dodge timing while retaining more manageable crowd pressure. Presets still offer a simple route for people who do not want to study a page of values, but granular controls offer room for players to shape the experience around the kind of challenge they actually enjoy.
Remedy still wants players to try the intended balance first
The developer's position is not that the default balance is unimportant. Remedy has emphasized that Control Resonant has a deliberately tuned intended experience: one meant to feel tense, demanding, and rewarding. The team would prefer players initially meet the game on those terms, learn where their own limits are, and then decide whether a particular setting needs to move.
There is value in that suggestion. A game's opening hours teach players its vocabulary, timing, and expectations. Immediately lowering every challenge setting can deny someone the chance to discover that they were only a few attempts away from understanding a mechanic. Likewise, immediately maximizing difficulty can obscure the encounter pacing the developers have built. Trying the baseline first gives the player useful information: is this encounter genuinely inaccessible, is it a temporary learning curve, or is the game simply not pushing back enough?
Still, Control Resonant's approach is notably flexible once that assessment has been made. Remedy's stated priority is that a player who hits a wall should be able to change the rules and continue rather than abandon the game altogether. That position treats player time as valuable and rejects the idea that there is only one valid way to experience a single-player action game.
"We do have a meticulously crafted, intended experience for CONTROL Resonant," Mohov wrote. "It's balanced to be tense, demanding, and rewarding. However, our philosophy is straightforward: if you run into a wall and the friction becomes too much, we would much rather you tweak the rules to overcome it than put the controller down and stop playing."
No achievement penalty for using accessibility settings
One of the most consequential details is that Control Resonant will not lock trophies or achievements behind these settings. Players who modify the combat rules will still be able to earn the game's achievement rewards.
That decision removes a common source of anxiety around accessibility options. If a player needs assistance with aiming, timing, visual clarity, damage, or crowd control, a penalty can turn a supposedly optional feature into a public mark that their completion was somehow less legitimate. It can also pressure players into enduring an experience that is painful, fatiguing, or simply not enjoyable in order to keep a completion record intact.
For a game offering this many variables, tying achievements to untouched defaults would also be difficult to justify. The entire premise is that different players may need different support. Someone who changes only projectile speed because of a reaction-time limitation is not necessarily bypassing the broader demands of exploration, combat decisions, progression, story, or other systems. Remedy's policy instead puts the emphasis on finishing and enjoying the game in the form that works for the individual player.
Accessibility beyond combat difficulty
The options do not stop with action mechanics. Control Resonant will include colorblind modes, adjustable subtitle size, adjustable text size, motion-sickness-related settings, and a range of separate volume controls. These are all increasingly expected features, but their inclusion remains significant because they affect whether players can comfortably understand and engage with a game for extended sessions.
Text and subtitle customization is especially essential in narrative-heavy games, where small default fonts can turn dialogue, tutorials, menus, and lore into unnecessary barriers. Motion-sickness settings can be just as consequential in a visually intense action title, particularly one likely to feature rapid combat movement and dramatic visual effects.
Remedy has also mentioned a hyperacusis filter. Hyperacusis involves heightened sensitivity to sound, and audio filters of this kind can be vital for players who find certain frequencies, abrupt noises, or intense effects physically uncomfortable. Even players without a diagnosed sensitivity may appreciate more control over harsh audio, especially in games with loud combat, sudden stingers, and dense effects layers.
A useful middle ground in the difficulty debate
Arguments about difficulty often become needlessly absolute. One perspective values a fixed challenge as part of the artistic identity of a game: persistence, failure, adaptation, and eventual mastery are the experience. Another emphasizes that buying a game should not mean being blocked from its story, world, and later content by one demanding sequence or inaccessible mechanic.
Control Resonant does not entirely dissolve that disagreement, and it does not need to. Some games are built around a highly specific form of shared adversity, where changing the rules would fundamentally alter their central purpose. But not every game has that goal, and accessibility cannot be reduced to a debate over whether a player has "earned" an ending.
Remedy's proposal offers a persuasive middle ground: begin with the carefully authored default experience, then provide precise tools when that experience no longer serves the person playing it. Players seeking the original balance can leave it alone. Players who need a wider dodge window, a calmer battlefield, clearer text, less severe audio, or a harder fight can make targeted changes without being forced into an all-or-nothing preset.
Whether the final interface makes these many choices understandable will be crucial. Granular options are only as helpful as the explanations around them. Players need to know what a slider changes, how strongly it changes it, and whether the effect can be reversed without confusion. But the design philosophy behind Control Resonant is encouraging. It respects developer tuning without treating that tuning as more important than the people trying to play.
